Match Preview – Uruguay vs Argentina

2012-10-16-001

Argentina will look to continue their march towards a possible ARC title on Tuesday evening as they face Uruguay in their second of three matches. The Jaguars were in punishing form against the United States on Friday, and are unlikely to offer any respite to an outmatched side coming off a comprehensive defeat to Canada.

Only four players remain from the starting side that beat the Americans, among them centre Javier Rojas who caused all kinds of problems in the midfield. Ramiro Moyano’s three try second half performance has earned him a start at fullback, while Valentin Cruz gets an opportunity to run the game from flyhalf. Captain Tomas Cubelli is rested as Marcos Bollini starts in his place at scrumhalf with blindside flanker Benjamin Macome assuming the leadership role.

A strong second row pairing sees the 2011 IRB u20 duo of Matias Alemanno and Cesar Fruttero together again, while former Pumitas captain Lisandro Ahualli starts at the back of the scrum. Another player to watch is World Cup squad member Alejandro Campos. The former Clermont flanker has slipped down the pecking order and will be looking to press his claims for a spot on the senior tour in November.

Los Teros have retained just two forwards from the Canadian match including hooker and captain Arturo Avalo, and back row Diego Magno who switches from the side of the scrum to no8. Experienced test prop Juan Rombys comes in to bolster the scrum but will have two young and inexperienced locks behind him in Mathias Palomeque and Mateo Sanguinetti, both making their run-on senior debuts.

The backs have a more settled look to them as the entire three quarter line is retained except for the left wing where Federico Favaro swaps with Gaston Mieres, who moves to the bench. The halfbacks are changed, however, as Francisco Vecino comes in at scrumhalf and 19 year old Rodrigo Silva is given the reigns at flyhalf.

Even with the changes to the Argentinean side there will be nowhere to hide for a very inexperienced Uruguayan side. Expect a feast of tries from the hungry Jaguars as they continue where they left off against the US. Argentina by 40.
