After waiting patiently for Rugby Canada to post the Edmonton game, time has run out so here’s the rundown on the other two games from the weekend. Poor form indeed.

JAPAN 17 vs 27 TONGA
Saturday, May 25, 05:00 GMT, Yokohama

An excellent start to the Pacific Nations Cup saw Tonga surprise Japan by playing some impressive rugby despite having only two days preparation together. Lua Lokotui was a late scratch from the Ikale Tahi lineup meaning Emosi Kauhenga got his first start since mid-2011, and he made the most of it with his huge physical presence earning a couple turnovers and several thumping runs. Props Eddie Aholelei and Taione Vea were strong on debut, while captain Nili Latu was in top form earning man of the match honours.

The Japanese struggled with the physicality of the Tongans in the tackle and at the breakdown, and had to rely on the strength of their back row and midfield to get them over the gain line. When they did they failed to capitalize and too often found themselves isolated. Eddie Jones will take positives from a good lineout performance, but will need to conjure some inspiration heading into their next match against Fiji.

A game was played, but those who weren’t lucky enough to catch the live web feed are out of luck. By all accounts the broadcast quality was poor, maybe that’s why they haven’t bothered to post it as of yet.

ENGLAND 40 vs 12 BARBARIANS
Sunday, May 26, 12:00 GMT, London

Evidently someone forgot to tell the Barbarians that they actually had to play after enjoying the London nightlife in the lead up to the weekend. The result was a desperately poor encounter that closer resembled a training run than an international rugby match. If it weren’t for Elliot Daly’s insistence on not embarrassing himself, we might have forgotten that any opposition had shown up at all.

Stuart Lancaster will be pleased with the showing of his young players on trial, in particular pacy wings Marland Yarde and Christian Wade, but with tackling optional and nothing at stake, there isn’t much to make of it. They now head to South America to face a second string but still dangerous Argentina side. The Barbarians will have a few more drinks, then think about turning up in Hong Kong to face the Lions in a showpiece match that threatens to be just as awful as this one.
