In Review – ARC Round 2

The Jaguars have sewn up the title thanks to Canada’s putrid performance against the Americans. It’s hard to stomach just how poor the hosts were as they crashed to defeat.

URUGUAY 0 vs 34 ARGENTINA
Tuesday, October 15, 18:00 PST, Langford

Well it took some warming up, but Ramiro Moyano’s try on the 25th minute finally broke the Uruguayan defense. Within five minutes Moyano was over again, and just like that the contest was over. Los Teros stayed in the game, however, and their resilient defense impressed despite giving up 34 unanswered points. For a period of over 40 minutes they held their line and crunching hits from flankers Agustin Alonso and Juan de Freitas, among others, drove back much bigger Argentine opponents.

With that it is job done for Argentina, who have clinched the championship with a game to spare. Canada will be an exercise in consistency for those hoping to impress the selectors, and a chance to maintain their historical unbeaten record in ARC competition. Uruguay will try to upset a resurgent American side in what could be a closer game than anticipated.

CANADA 10 vs 30 UNITED STATES
Tuesday, October 15, 20:00 PST, Langford

Canada fell utterly flat against the Selects with one of the worst performances seen on home soil in years. Teenage debutant Guiseppe du Toit had a tough introduction to senior rep rugby, but it was the veterans around him who failed to galvanise a side bereft of leadership in the wake of Andrew Tiedemann’s injury against Uruguay. The selection of three openside flankers in the back row proved a disastrous strategy as the Americans pulverised them at the breakdown and dominated the forward exchanges like we have rarely, if ever, seen before.

Credit must go do Mike Tolkin’s men for finally getting one in the win column. Cameron Dolan was outstanding in a very good pack, and Joe Cowley’s kicking was top drawer. Shaun Davies looked good at scrumhalf and winger Tim Maupin was good value for both of his tries. The Canucks will now finish third and the Americans second, a moral victory for an embattled side.
