ENGLAND 22 vs 30 NEW ZEALAND
Saturday, November 16, 14:30 GMT, London

The All Blacks continued their winning streak as they fought off a resilient English side at Twickenham. While Owen Farrell did his best to keep his side in touch with five penalty goals and a conversion, it was two world class offloads that created tries and won the match for New Zealand. Kieran Read drew in three defenders to put Julian Savea away within two minutes of the opening kickoff, and it was Savea again late in the game taking a superb pass from Ma’a Nonu to win the game after England had taken an unlikely lead.

Stuart Lancaster will have been pleased with the efforts of his forwards, in particular the tight five who impressed in the set pieces and proved more than a match in the loose. Also impressive was the determination of his side to claw back from an early 14 point deficit that threatened to get out of hand. The inspiration of the New Zealand backs will be something Lancaster will need to emulate if his side are to topple the southern hemisphere giants again.

WALES 40 vs 6 ARGENTINA
Saturday, November 16, 14:30 GMT, Cardiff

Warren Gatland deserves a pat on the back and Rhodri Jones an apology as Wales made short work of an unconvincing Pumas side at the Millenium Stadium. While the Argentines had the better of the Welsh scrum, it was never a factor as Jones held enough to win the ball and Toby Faletau carried well off the back. The scoreline flattered Wales somewhat as Argentina enjoyed some decent passages of play, but were ultimately held try-less as they failed to convert their chances.

Mike Phillips had a strong game, scoring an early breakaway try, and Leigh Halfpenny contributed 20 points with the boot. George North caused havoc with ball in hand, and debutant Cory Allen looked comfortable at centre. The Pumas will be very pleased with Santiago Cordero, who impressed with some silky running, but will need to find some energy as they head to Rome to face the Azzurri.

FRENCH BARBARIANS 20 vs 19 SAMOA
Saturday, November 16, 17:00 GMT, Clermont

A fun game of rugby appropriately played below test match intensity, but one the Samoan reserves will be appreciative of to get some game time on their somewhat abbreviated tour. In true Barbarians style the game started at a frantic pace, with Alapati Leiua breaking away for the first try barely a minute in. Brando Va’aulu scored an excellent individual effort to finish off an initial break by Isaia Tu’ifua, but a cheeky try by Heini Adams got the Barbarians back in the match, and Gerhard Vosloo touched down in the midst of a maul to level the scores at the half.

Kahn Fotuali’i imitated Leiua with his own breakaway try straight off the second half restart, and then it was Adams again with his second, this time catching the blindside ruck defense unawares. Sadly the Barbarians cheated and kicked a penalty via Valentin Courrent in the dying minutes to steal the win. Samoa move on to face the Georgians on their home turf for the first time on Saturday.

IRELAND 15 vs 32 AUSTRALIA
Saturday, November 16, 17:45 GMT, Dublin

The expected gulf in class between the two backlines was very evident, but it was in the forwards where Australia enjoyed an unexpected advantage. The maligned Wallaby pack dominated the Irish scrum with surprising ease, and the balance of success at the contact area weighed heavily in Australia’s favour. Ireland looked at times as though they were playing a club fixture rather than an international, with several prominent players having lacklustre efforts.

Ewen McKenzie would be well pleased with the result, especially the manner of victory. Quade Cooper had his backline humming and man-of-the-match Michael Hooper was all over the pitch, scoring two tries for himself. Not so happy would be Irish defensive coach Les Kiss, who will surely be on extra duty ahead of the All Blacks fixture after three very soft tries were conceded through poor defensive alignment.

FRANCE 38 vs 18 TONGA
Saturday, November 16, 19:00 GMT, Le Havre

A couple unsavoury incidents tainted an otherwise entertaining fixture at the Stade Oceane. Taniela Moa’s needless elbow on Dimitri Szarzewski earned him a yellow card, and a punch-up between Sona Taumalolo and Yoann Maestri saw both men shown red. France had the game wrapped up by half-time, but the Tongans played well with ball in hand and only some poor execution denied them at least one try.

In the second half France exerted more control, applying more pressure at the breakdown while dominating the scrum and maul. Tonga had their moments and Fetu’u Vainikolo scored two well-earned tries, the last one right on full-time to end the match on a high. France will be pleased to exact revenge, but will certainly need to tighten up against the formidable challenge of the Springboks in Paris on Saturday.
