In Review – A Summary Of The Weekend’s Action

2012-11-12-001

Brief reports and team information from all nine matches from this past weekend.

RUSSIA 26 vs 40 UNITED STATES
Friday, November 9, 16:00 GMT, Colwyn Bay

Robbie Shaw scored two tries in a man-of-the-match performance against an underwhelming Russian side who never threatened until late in the match. The American pack outmuscled their counterparts at the breakdown and held at the set piece. A good start for the Eagles, particularly for debutant Toby L’Estrange, who looked assured at flyhalf and scored a try of his own.

SAMOA 42 vs 12 CANADA
Friday, November 9, 18:30 GMT, Colwyn Bay

A magnificent debut for Samoan winger Robert Lilomaiava saw him score four tries as the Manu put Canada to the sword early. Showing unusual discipline, halfbacks Jeremy Su’a and Tusi Pisi led Samoa through the phases patiently and effectively. The Canadians had no answer for the Samoan power runners and looked flat until impact subs contributed to two late scores.

ITALY 28 vs 23 TONGA
Saturday, November 10, 14:00 GMT, Brescia

An exciting back and forth battle saw Italy edge out Tonga via the boot of Kris Burton and a dominant scrum. The Tongans looked a bit pedestrian at times and quicker ball might have given more chances to their dangerous outside backs. Italy will be pleased but will not have shown much to concern their All Black opponents of next week.

ROMANIA 23 vs 34 JAPAN
Saturday, November 10, 14:00 GMT, Bucharest

The Romanians absolutely crushed the Cherry Blossoms scrum, but came off second best elsewhere as the pace of the Japanese was too much. Veteran winger Hirotoki Onozawa scored the decisive try late in the game while fullback Ayumu Goromaru contributed 19 points with a fine kicking performance.

WALES 12 vs 26 ARGENTINA
Saturday, November 10, 14:30 GMT, Cardiff

A stagnant first half but Argentina came alive in the second and scored two good tries against an uninspired Wales. A serious knee injury to Felipe Contepomi early on threated to derail the Pumas but they held their composure and out-worked the Welsh earning their first every victory in Cardiff.

ENGLAND 52 vs 12 FIJI
Saturday, November 10, 14:30 GMT, London

England were far from their best but still strolled to victory over a ragged Fijian side. Charlie Sharples and Manu Tuilagi scored two tries apiece as the Fijian scrum crumbled. Nikola Matawalu scored a scintillating individual score but there was little else to cheer about from the tourists.

IRELAND 12 vs 16 SOUTH AFRICA
Saturday, November 10, 17:30 GMT, Dublin

Ruan Pienaar scored the lone try of a physical encounter at the Aviva Stadium. Ireland were valiant in defense but never really looked like scoring beyond Jonathan Sexton’s penalty goals. South Africa’s choice of tactics seemed misplaced, and if they deserved victory it wasn’t by much.

FRANCE 33 vs 6 AUSTRALIA
Saturday, November 10, 20:00 GMT, Paris

Australia slumped to a comprehensive defeat in Paris. The French scrum was front and centre while the Wallaby attack looked completely bereft of ideas facing the blue wall in front of them. Louis Picamoles had a storming match while Frederic Michalak was in magical form for Les Bleus.

SCOTLAND 22 vs 51 NEW ZEALAND
Sunday, November 11, 14:30 GMT, Edinburgh

The All Blacks put on a clinical display of running rugby at Murrayfield against a better than expected Scottish resistance. Dan Carter scored 21 points and Julian Savea crossed for two tries, but Tim Visser nabbed two of his own and Geoff Cross added another for Scotland. Though the score was lopsided Andy Robinson’s side can hold their heads high.
