Team of the Week

Not the greatest group to be choosing from this weekend, but there was just enough there to get the job done. There just might be one or two controversial picks!

2013-11-04-001

1 – Hubert Buydens (Canada) Strong in the scrum against Ben Afeaki and a good session around the pitch. A welcome return to international colours for the Last of the Beardos.

2 – Stephen Moore (Australia) It seems antithetical to pick an Australian forward, but the hairless hooker actually played pretty well amidst the dross. One of the few Wallabies to exit the game with their reputation intact.

3 – Kensuke Hatakeyama (Japan) Not a dream weak for tightheads, but the stocky veteran from Miyagi gets the nod for a yeoman’s effort in the tight-loose. Got the best of Wyatt Crockett in the scrum.

4 – Courtney Lawes (England) A quiet-ish game by his standards with no monster tackles but he put his work in and was a factor in the lineout. He’ll be hoping for more against Argentina.

5 – Tyler Ardron (Canada) His country’s best against the Maori. Some excellent tackles and a huge contribution in the lineout. He has improved since joining the Ospreys.

6 – Steven Luatua (New Zealand) Shone brighter than Bird in the lineout and put in a fantastic effort around the pitch. His combined tackle with McCaw in the 81st minute was superb.

7 – Chris Robshaw (England) Hard to leave out both Sam Cane and Michael Broadhurst, but given the context of the game the England captain deserves a mention. Scored a crucial try and enhanced his leadership credentials.

8 – Richie McCaw (New Zealand) Playing out of position and didn’t miss a beat. Even scored a try for his troubles.

9 – Jamison Gibson-Park (NZ Maori) Two tries and a very sharp match as he stepped up in place of late withdrawal Piri Weepu. Seems to read the game well and runs great support lines.

10 – Dan Carter (New Zealand) A little over a half’s worth of time required, checked all the boxes. Good to go for the rest of the tour.

11 – Charles Piutau (New Zealand) The All Blacks have themselves another class act. Great to see him performing like we all hoped he would on the big stage.

12 – Matt To’omua (Australia) Pretty much sealed it with his rampaging run straight over an embarrassed Billy Twelvetrees. Kicked well and played as best he could behind a listless pack. Honorable mention to Craig Wing of Japan.

13 – Ben Smith (New Zealand) Scored yet another try and looked perfectly comfortable once again at centre. Solidifying his spot in the World Cup squad two years out.

14 – Frank Halai (New Zealand) The big man rumbled his way through poor defenders, though he would have liked to see the ball a little more. A well earned try to boot.

15 – Mike Brown (England) Probably the player of the weekend. Even bamboozled an official with his footwork. Obviously very happy to be wearing 15 rather than 11.
