Another strange match, this one as close to pointless as it gets. With so many injured or unavailable, one wonders why this is even taking place. As expected none of the English-based players are included as it lies outside the IRB test window, which kind of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? Surely Warren Gatland knows his test side by now, could a player legitimately sway his opinion based on a glorified training scrimmage? It seems as though only those players from which nothing is expected have anything to gain. The Probables have no direction to go but down.
It’s therefore silly to prognosticate on a result, and we’re left to guess who might be worth paying attention to come kickoff. The Probables are all known quantities, and meanwhile nearly every able-bodied professional in Wales has been summoned to fill the gaps. James Davies, 7s international and brother of Jonathan, has yet to even play a game for Scarlets and somehow finds himself on the Possibles bench.
Matthew Rees returns after a scare with cancer, but really all we’re hoping for is that he comes through capably. With nearly 60 caps it’s hard to see what more he has to prove. Gareth Davies and Dan Baker have enjoyed impressive form of late and are likely to be on the plane, though surely they’ve done enough already to justify their place.
Ellis Jenkins could be in with a shout as only his regional teammate Josh Navidi as an out-and-out openside alternative, though it appears Aaron Shingler will fill the role in the absence of injured Lions Sam Warburton and Justin Tipuric. Jordan Williams is another promising talent who could conceivably be named in the touring squad, though he’ll have some eating to do if he hopes to fill the boots of George North or Alex Cuthbert, or even Liam Williams for that matter.
