Willie Ripia kicked 22 points as the Maori just slipped from Canada near the end of a messy match at Iffley Road. The Canadians looked the better side for large parts of it but a soft try to Andre Taylor and several mistakes cost them a potential victory. Coach Kieran Crowley will have been pleased by his younger players but probably less so with some of the veterans.

The Fijians completed a remarkable turnaround in form as they defeated the Georgians in their own backyard. The tremendous effort of the forwards was most evident in the scrums, where the much-fancied Lelo pack was repeatedly shoved backwards in an astonishing manner. The game was played at a frenetic pace which suited the Fijian running game, and their backs finally produced a winning performance on an otherwise hugely underwhelming tour.

Ireland displayed a much improved attacking game against a tired Pumas side at the Aviva. Some nifty footwork from Craig Gilroy netted him his first try after only ten minutes of international action, and Jonny Sexton controlled the game while scoring two tries of his own in a 19 point haul. Late tries from Tomas Leonardi and Juan Fernandez Lobbe added some respectability to the scoreline, but in truth Argentina looked out on their feet at the end of their most gruelling test schedule to date.

Luciano Orquera missed a last minute penalty goal as Australia escaped embarrassment in a bumbling performance that saw them go scoreless for the last 50 minutes. After leading 22-3 after a half hour, a comedy of errors allowed Italy back into the game, and a draw would have been no less than deserved. The Wallabies seem to have taken a page out the French book of consistency, and it’s anyone’s guess which version will show up against Wales.

After opening the scoring through Andrei Filip, the Romanians conceded 34 unanswered points in a dreadful performance against the United States. Opposite flankers Vasile Rus and John Quill were sent off by referee Leighton Hodges after a second half punch up in the scrappy affair. Chris Wyles scored 19 points in a starring role for the Eagles, who finish off their campaign on a high.

A bizarre decision by captain Chris Robshaw to kick for points with two minutes on the clock and England four points adrift is sure to be the talking point at the water cooler for the best part of the coming week. Neither side seemed intent on playing much rugby in the rain, and it was a fortuitous ricochet that landed in the hands of Willem Alberts that produced the solitary try. England now have only a draw to show for the last eleven tests against the Springboks, and have only themselves to blame.

In a match not short on intensity but bereft of sensibility the Tongans upset a woeful Scottish effort at dreary Pittodrie. Despite receiving three yellow cards and conceding more than twenty penalties, Tonga scored two tries and had Fangatapu Apikotoa not missed several kicks the difference might have been even greater. Scotland failed to take advantage of numerous scoring positions and the shuddering result appears to have cost head coach Andy Robinson his job.

The Manu looked intent on spoiling the party in Paris as they led until the hour mark, only to fade in the final quarter in an otherwise passionate effort at the Stade de France. Census Johnston’s grubber created a magical try for David Lemi, but Tusi Pisi left several points on the board in the midst of an ordinary kicking performance. France could muster little offence and their only try came from a charge down by Frederic Michalak, who scored 19 points in all to lead Les Bleus to an uninspired win.

Andrew Hore will surely face the wrath of the citing commissioner after his swinging arm from behind took out Bradley Davies with barely a minute showing on the clock.
